The University of Engineering and Technology is the government university which was established in 1921. Initially, it was named as the Maclagan Engineering College and became affiliated with the University of Punjab. It gained university status in 1962 and its name was changed to West Pakistan University of Engineering and Technology Lahore. After few years, it was again renamed to its current name in 1972.
